14 October 2016

Dear colleagues and students

The University of Cape Town's Council agreed this evening on the executive and Senior Leadership Group's plan to complete the 2016 academic programme.

The university will resume academic activities on Monday, 17 October 2016 in the following manner:

  • Teaching and learning will resume through a variety of approaches, including blended learning. The precise combination will vary by faculty and discipline and will be communicated to students by their faculties and departments shortly.
  • UCT libraries and computer labs will be open
  • The Jammie Bus service will be operating

The plan envisages the academic programme ending on Wednesday, 2 November 2016, with exams commencing on Monday 7 November 2016.

Council mandated the executive to continue engagements with protesters. The intention is to find a solution that will allow classroom-based activities to be reinstated and to minimise the need for extensive security.

I call on all students and staff to support the plan to resume academic activities.

Sincerely,

Dr Max Price
Vice-Chancellor
