UCT condemns attack on Garissa University College, Kenya

The University of Cape Town condemns the attack by armed gunmen at Garissa University College in Kenya early this morning, saying that universities are meant to be special places of learning, sharing and tolerance, not violence.

Gerda Kruger, the Executive Director: Communications & Marketing at UCT, said: "On behalf of the university, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Garissa University College community and to Kenya at this difficult time. I also extend condolences to the 222 Kenyans who are studying at UCT this year, and who are now worried about this new attack in their home country."

UCT encourages any students and staff members who are experiencing stress because of this tragedy to take advantage of the free counselling services that are available at the university.
