International award for Subotzky

24 July 2009

Mikhael Subotzky, a graduate of UCT's Michaelis School of Fine Art, has won the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Subotzky took the prize for his photographic collection of Beaufort West, which reflects both the town's beauty and its darker side. The acclaimed photographer first stepped into the spotlight with his final-year project at Michaelis, which focused on South African prison life. The second South African recipient of the Leica Oskar Barnack, Subotzky has also won the 2008 ICP Infinity Award, the 2007 KLM Paul Huf Award, and the 2006 F25 Award for Concerned Photography, among others.
