: Big business: Respected businessman Dr Iqbal Survé has won the Die Burger/Cape Town Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year Award.

Dr Iqbal Survé, chair and chief executive officer of the Cape Town-based empowerment group Sekunjalo Investments, and chair of the UCT Graduate School of Business Board of Advisors, has won the prestigious Business Leader of the Year Award.

Jointly awarded by Cape Town newspaper Die Burger and the Cape Town Chamber of Commerce, the award was instituted 18 years ago. Previous recipients include Johan Rupert, Christo Wiese, Dr Anton Rupert, Raymond Ackerman and Pam Golding.

The award recognises outstanding business leadership and excellent contributions to business and society.

On receiving the award, Survé acknowledged previous winners and said he was deeply humbled by the honour, especially as it was conferred on the same night when one of his heroes, Albert Luthuli, was being honoured. He called on the captains of industry and commerce to work together to find solutions for the complex challenges in a post-apartheid South Africa, and to act in partnership with government and local communities.
