Music and dance to set stage alight at the Baxter

28 August 2006

The UCT School of Dance presents Send in the Clowns - A Masque of Moods at the Baxter Theatre from August 31 to September 2.

This multi-disciplinary production of dance and music will bring together performers from the UCT Drama Department, the UCT School of Dance and classical and jazz singers from the South African College of Music, as well as the UCT Big Band, conducted by Mike Campbell.

Brad Liebl directs the singers, including School of Dance students, who have been encouraged to step out of their dance "box" to explore vocal performance skills.

Directed by Geoffrey Hyland, Send in the Clowns comprises extracts from music and music theatre that epitomise the faces that people wear.

The diverse range of choreographic styles in the production is provided by Mavis Becker, Adele Blank, Sharon Friedman, Jay Pather, Maxwell Xolani Rani, Lindy Raizenberg, and Yarisha Singh, and it will highlight the versatility of the students and the diverse dance styles offered at the School of Dance.

The programme runs on Thursday, August 31, at 20h00; Friday; September 1, at 20h00; and Saturday, September 2, at 14h30 and 20h00.

Book at Computicket or at the Baxter Booking Office. Tickets cost R40 and R50. Students cost R25 and schools block bookings are R15 (please arrange through the School of Dance on 650 4601).

On Saturday, September 2, after the 20h00 show, UCT alumni are cordially invited to join the Dean of Humanities, Professor Paula Ensor, for gluhwein and coffee in the Baxter foyer.
