Winning smile: Final-year student Landiwe Sindani won the award for CADP student of the year.

Italian Studies staff and award-winning students - from left, back, Mario Franchi, Wilhelm Snyman, Bruno Sauchelli (Italian consulate), and front, from left, Assoc Prof Nelia Saxby, Shelly Hanslo, Kessini Murugesan, Cara Shapiro, Janina Schrambock and Roberto Busetto - were among those present and garlanded at the School of Languages and Literatures annual class-medal handover in July. The cream of the students from the school's eight sections were honoured with medals and book prizes for their performances in 2004. Guests included, as has become a feature of the occasion, a number of international consuls. The event also marked the first time that the school awarded medals for Initial Arabic. Arabic II went onto the school's books for the first time this year, and the first full-time appointment in the section is expected to be made soon.
