Off the list

I have just come across a list, compiled recently by The Times Higher Education Supplement, listing World University Rankings for 2004.

To my astonishment, neither UCT nor Wits is included in the top 200 universities listed, although, if memory serves me correctly, both were included in a similar listing some years ago.

Can anybody suggest an explanation for the failure of our two leading South African universities to make the list? Have we really declined so sharply over a relatively short period?
