McAfee is the new anti-virus software choice for UCT

24 November 2003

F-Secure will be replaced by McAfee's Active Virus Scan suite in January 2004. UCT has signed a two-year contract to use the McAfee Active Scan suite of products.

What does it cover?

The decision-making process was tough, but McAfee's comprehensive product range best suits UCT's environment. In particular it offers cover to all Windows versions in use on campus from Windows 95 to Windows 2003. It covers Novell, Windows and Unix servers too. McAfee Active Scan will cater for hardware from the older PCs to the very latest laptops. Also important in our particular environment is that the software licence will cover home-use copies for UCT staff and registered students.

When will this happen?

As our current F-Secure licence expires at the end of December 2003 the software on all desktops must be replaced before then. Implementation will begin with the Student Labs in November 2003, and will be distributed to staff PCs after that. A script, activated when you login, will automatically remove F-Secure and replace it with McAfee Active Virus Scan.

What about my Home PC?

This also means that anyone with a home-use copy of F-Secure will have to remove it from their home PC as it will be considered an unregistered, and therefore, illegal copy. McAfee installation CDs will be available from the ICTS reception desk in early December. Regular articles will appear in the Monday Paper, on mailing lists, on the UCT notice board and the ICTS website (www.icts.uct.ac.za) to ensure that all staff and students on campus are kept informed as to the change in anti-virus software.
