New Klatzow composition for Peabody Conservatory

04 August 2003
Professor Peter Klatzow's latest composition, Towards the Light, is to be performed at the Peabody Conservatory, Baltimore, in the United States.

Peabody is undergoing a US$28-million restoration and expansion of all its facilities and concert halls and their principal organist, Donald Sutherland, has been asked to play the opening concert to celebrate the re-opening of the buildings and concert halls, Klatzow said.

The programme will include the first performance of Towards the Light and will take place in April next year.

The work is composed for double choir (wordless), marimba and organ. According to Klatzow, it was commissioned by Sondra Goldsmith Proctor and Harold Davis Goldsmith in celebration of the life of the Reverend Doctor J Davis Goldsmith. Klatzow described the work as "a journey out of multiple tonalities and textures towards clarity and simplicity".

A recent review in the Australian press reads: "Klatzow's essay (Variations on a Mazurka of Chopin, performed by UCT's Graham Fitch) was an eye (and ear) opener as it demonstrated solid craftsmanship. If the piece is a true reflection of this South African composer's standard then he demands further promotion in Australia".
