Gingerbread man meets his match in campus bake-out

28 July 2003
The classic fable of the gingerbread man will never be the same again (gulp). Make way, folks, for the rise of the gingerbread woman. The UCT Gender Forum is organising the baking and selling of gingerbread women in the lead up to National Women's Day on August 9. In the week of August 4-9 "gingerbread activists" will be mixing up, cutting out and baking 2 000 of these spicy biscuits in the Smuts Hall kitchen. Members of the UCT community are invited to sign up for one or more hour-long shifts from 20h00 on Tuesday, August 5, to 06h00 the following day. (Baking might be finished earlier depending on oven capacity, say the organisers.) UCT Radio will provide the music. If you don't fancy slaving over a hot oven in the wee hours, you can sign up for an hour-long shift selling the freshly baked produce on campus during lunchtime from Wednesday to Friday, August 6-8. Should neither of the above appeal to you, put your hand in your pocket and buy a gingerbread woman at R5 each. (Bulk packages of 10 gingerbread women are also available, but these should be ordered beforehand.) Most importantly, proceeds will go towards the Trauma Unit and to Rape Crisis. So run, run as fast as you can – get to a stall selling gingerbread women. You can enlist to bake or sell or place a bulk order by contacting shai.aisa@mailbox.co.za or sofieaisa@hotmail.com by July 29.
