The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) 2022 TB Davie Memorial Lecture was presented by Prof Fran Baum on Wednesday, 24 August 2022. Her lecture entitled: “Activism and the Corporate University: incompatible or possible?”, focused on the complexities that activist academics face when they challenge structures of power and privilege at higher education institutions.
Prof Fran Baum is the director of Stretton Health Equity at the University of Adelaide in Australia. The TB Davie Memorial Lecture was established 56 years ago by UCT students to honour Thomas Benjamin Davie, who was a defender of the principles of academic freedom.
