The UCT Employees Union strongly condemns the physical and verbal assaults on the Vice-Chancellor and members of the Senate on 9 November. Violence and intimidation has no place in a democracy, nor do such tactics help cultivate the inclusive UCT that we seek. We trust those individuals who wilfully inflicted harm on UCT staff and/or students will be held accountable for their actions.

The Employees Union supports continued dialogue between staff and students that promotes human rights and restores the dignity of all affected parties. We continue to support the UCT students' peaceful protests and we honour the student movements whose ethos is to critically engage with UCT management, through dialogue and peaceful protest, rather than resorting to violence.

We call upon UCT management to continue to exhaust all possible, alternative dispute resolution interventions, to progressively seek resolve for the affected members of our UCT community.
