UCT graduand becomes SA’s first black observational ocean biogeochemist
Mhlangabezi Mdutyana is a University of Cape Town (UCT) PhD graduate-in-waiting. He’s the son of a domestic worker and a security guard and he grew up on the dusty roads of Polar Park in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

Amend laws to help civil society challenge poor governance in SOEs
Refinements and amendments to specific laws will place civil society organisations (CSOs) in a much stronger position to challenge poor corporate governance in state-owned enterprises (SOEs), said PhD graduand Julieth Gudo. Julieth will graduate from the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Law this month.

New research suggests that over 80% of Africa’s savannah conservation land is failing or deteriorating with just 10% in a state of success or recovery. The study, published in Conservation Letters , assessed the performance of 516 protected areas and community conservation areas across savannah Africa.

The country’s cannabis industry has the potential to lift the economy from the brink of ruin, provided every effort is made to destigmatise the sector first, says Nqobile Bundwini, a lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT). South Africa’s cannabis sector is currently worth an estimated R28 billion.

Scientific Leadership Prize for UCT infectious diseases expert
Professor Graeme Meintjes, an adult infectious diseases physician and the second chair and deputy head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT), has been awarded the 2020 European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) Scientific Leadership Prize for his significant contribution to the improved understanding of HIV and its complications. This prize comes shortly after Meintjes was awarded the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Scientific Merit Award: Gold Medal.

Thanks to rigorous COVID-19 health and safety protocols, UCT's Faculty of Health Sciences has maintained its body donor programme without risking staff or students. The programme is essential to teaching anatomy and new surgical techniques. Globally, the pandemic has forced many health sciences faculties to close their programmes.

Protection of refugee rights – why human rights commissions may be the answer
With an unprecedented increase in the number of refugees around the world in recent years there is a need to effectively promote and protect refugee rights particularly in Africa, which has historically been the continent with one of the largest displaced populations. This is according to Dr Vivian John-Langba, a recent PhD recipient at UCT whose research identified national human rights institutions as one of the institutions through which effective promotion and protection of refugee rights can occur.

Climate change may lead to increase in health effects associated with exposure to pesticides
Climate change may lead to an increase in health effects associated with exposure to endocrine disrupting pesticides, unless measures are put in place to ban the manufacture, trade and use of these pesticides. This is just one finding from research by Dr Cliff Zinyemba who recently received his PhD in Public Health from UCT.
