More than half of adolescents in SA township show signs of anxiety, depression
A new University of Cape Town (UCT) study has found that more than half of adolescents in a South African township are living with significant symptoms of anxiety and depression, and that the ways they cope with stress may be making their struggles worse.

UCT’s Nxomani balances studies and sport as Springbok women’s team manager
When the University of Cape Town (UCT) student Thandiswa Nxomani first volunteered to manage the African Bombers amateur rugby club in the Eastern Cape, she thought she was simply filling a gap. The club needed a manager, and she stepped forward. She didn’t realise that her decision would spark a new passion and set her on a path that would take her to the highest level of the game as team manager of the Springbok Women.

Mental disorders linked to shorter life expectancy in people with HIV
A new international study led by researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of Bern has found that people living with HIV who also have a mental disorder live, on average, three to five years shorter than people with HIV who do not have a mental health condition.

As Africa confronts a mounting public health crisis, a simple yet powerful solution is being left on the table: health taxes. While the continent battles the dual burden of rising noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and persistent infectious disease burden, most countries are not leveraging health taxes – excise duties on harmful products like tobacco, alcohol and sugary drinks – to curb consumption, boost domestic revenues and protect overburdened health systems.

UCT leads Africa to the global stage through hosting of world epidemiology congress
The University of Cape Town (UCT) will spearhead Africa's role in global health by hosting the World Congress of Epidemiology (WCE2024) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 24 to 27 September 2024. For the first time in the event’s history, this renowned gathering, organised by the International Epidemiological Association, will be held on African soil, with over 1 200 delegates expected to attend. The theme for this year’s Congress is “ Epidemiology and complexity: challenges and responses”.
