Effective fisheries management critical in improving sustainable fishing
Where fisheries are well managed, fish populations can recover. This is according to new international research co-authored by Dr Carryn de Moor, a senior research officer from the University of Cape Town’s; Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and the Marine Resource Assessment and Management Group.

UCT among top 10 emerging-economy universities
The University of Cape Town (UCT) has held its position at ninth in the 2019 Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings and is the top university in Africa. South Africa has nine universities in the Emerging Economies Rankings, up from eight last year, and retains seven in the top 200.

UCT students weigh in on men's role in addressing gender-based violence in South Africa
Research from lobby group, Sonke Gender Justice, shows that the impact of gender-based violence has been estimated to cost South Africa up to R42.4 billion per year. It also reports that the Western Cape is one of the most unsafe provinces in South Africa. A third of the country's murders are reported to police stations in this province.

Injectable birth control may raise HIV infection risk by 40%
The intramuscular injectable contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate, or DMPA, may raise the risk for HIV infection by 40% in women, according to research published recently in Endocrine Reviews. Research indicates alternative contraception methods may help protect women.

Surgical patients are twice as likely to die in Africa - UCT study
When compared to the global average, 1 in 5 surgical patients in Africa, who are generally young and fit, will develop complications, and 2% will die following surgery. This mortality rate is twice the global average for surgical mortality, which is 1%.
