14 February 2024 | Emer Prof Daya Reddy

Dear colleagues and students

I extend a warm welcome to all new and returning students of the University of Cape Town (UCT) as we begin this academic year full of hope, promise, and opportunities. Whether you are starting your journey with us for the first time or returning to continue your educational pursuits, I am delighted to have you all onboard for what looks to be an exciting and successful year ahead.

We are elated that you are part of UCT; and we appreciate that you will actively contribute towards the university’s success and sustainability, in this way ensuring that we remain the best in Africa and among the best in the world.

I extend a special welcome to our new students. You are about to set out on a life-changing adventure that will be full of development, learning, and exploration. I urge you to seize every opportunity that presents itself, both within and beyond the classroom. You will find a wealth of opportunities, networks of support, and experiences at our dynamic institution to help you succeed academically, emotionally, and professionally.

To our returning students, welcome back! Your dedication and perseverance are commendable, and I am confident that you will seek to continue doing well academically, and make a significant impact on our community. As you embark on another year of learning and exploration, remember to build upon the knowledge and experiences you have gained thus far, and to continue to strive for excellence in everything you do.

I would like to express my gratitude to our valued academic and Professional, Administrative Support and Service staff members for their dedication to our university’s purpose and principles. Your hard work and contributions play a pivotal role in creating an environment conducive to learning, creativity, and achievement for our students and colleagues alike. I am excited and look forward to another year of cooperation, growth, and success with you.

I acknowledge and thank all staff members who played a crucial role in ensuring the success of our Parent Orientation sessions. Your warm welcome and informative guidance provided invaluable support to our new students and their families as they begin this exciting journey with us.

I also am grateful to colleagues who diligently assisted with the First-Year Campus Reception. Your efficiency and professionalism were instrumental in ensuring a smooth transition for new students as they officially enrolled in their programmes.

We also owe our gratitude to the colleagues who put in endless hours to make sure that the Department of Student Affairs’ annual Welcome Festival went off without a hitch. The occasion honoured our diverse community and provided a great way for students to get in touch with the many networks and resources on campus. I thank everyone who helped make this event one to remember.

As we move into the academic year, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone of the importance of our collective contribution to Vision 2030 and to maintaining UCT’s position as the premier university in Africa. Vision 2030 outlines our strategic goals and aspirations as we strive to become the best university of the future, always with a focus on academic excellence, research innovation, and societal impact. Each member of our community plays a crucial role in working to realise these objectives, whether through ground-breaking research, impactful teaching and learning, community engagement, or fostering a vibrant and inclusive campus culture.

By working together and leveraging our diverse talents and perspectives, we can continue to strengthen UCT’s standing as a leading institution of higher learning, not only in Africa but on the global stage. I urge both staff and students to participate actively in initiatives aligned with Vision 2030, whether through contributing to research projects, engaging in community outreach efforts, or embracing opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Let us remain committed to our shared vision and ensure that UCT remains at the forefront of excellence, transformation and sustainability. Let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a spirit of collaboration. You are an essential part of our vibrant community, and your efforts are always appreciated.

I hope the academic year brings prosperity and fulfilment to each and every one of you.

Welcome to the 2024 academic year!

Sincerely

Emer Prof Daya Reddy
Vice-Chancellor interim
