The University of Cape Town (UCT) has announced details of the UCT Libraries services in the second semester. There are three main points.

First, UCT Libraries will not open physically on 1 September, but will continue as a virtual library service. This is due to the continued lockdown, UCT Libraries’ ability to function virtually and the decision to teach remotely for the remaining academic year.

Second, UCT Libraries’ revised Return to Research Service has been adapted to support the UCT Return to Research Plan. This prioritises master’s, PhD and postdoctoral research. To support this plan, UCT Libraries will offer limited services from 1 September, adopting a strict schedule on a closed-access basis. General browsing will not be permitted.

Third, UCT Libraries will launch the pilot phase of Leganto, a management tool for course reading lists, a first for South Africa. The tool provides seamless access to digital content, embeds reading lists within Vula for taught courses and tracks students’ use of reading list materials.
