Rainbow Week and other updates

03 October 2019 | Campus Announcement

Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town (UCT) community about:

1. Rainbow Week

Rainbow Week will take place at UCT from Monday, 7 October, to Friday, 11 October 2019. The week is an annual celebration of UCTʼs efforts to create an inclusive space for all. The organisers hope to encourage everyone to make the university a more welcoming space for its gender- and sexually diverse students and staff. The weekʼs events will include a queer poetry open mic night, panel discussions, a pride march and a plaza performance. Rainbow UCT is about fostering an inclusive space for all queer identifying individuals and cultivating a community of acceptance. All members of the community are invited to take part.

2. KaeloClinic

The KaeloClinic, which provides an accessible, on-site facility for all members of the university’s KaeloHealth Primary Healthcare medical product – staff in pay classes two to six – has officially opened its doors. While the clinic has been operational since the first week of September, the official opening took place on Wednesday, 25 September, in Graça Machel Hall.

3. Inaugural lecture: Professor Edwin Muchapondwa

Professor Edwin Muchapondwa will present the last Vice-Chancellor’s Inaugural Lecture for 2019 on 9 October. The lecture is titled “Nature resolves economic problems for humans – must humans not reciprocate?”. Professor Muchapondwa is the founding director of the Environmental Policy Research Unit and a former director of the School of Economics at UCT.

4. Invitation: transformation, inclusion and diversity think space

The Office for Inclusivity and Change invites you to a series of lunchtime discussions on transformation at UCT. The events will offer an opportunity to discuss the university’s transformation framework and the structures which support effective transformation, as well as offering a space to network with other transformation practitioners.

Please email Cheryl Vallay if you would like to attend one of the discussions on either 9 or 16 October 2019 from 12:30 to 14:30 in the Masingene Boardroom.

5. Bremner Shuttle service extended

The Jammie Shuttle Bremner service has been extended to middle campus. It starts on lower campus, goes to Bremner and on to middle campus (Kramer) and then back to lower campus. The service operates in the morning and will be extended to the end of the day.
