20 July 2016

Dear colleagues and students,

We are saddened to share news of the unexpected death of Dr Andile Nofemela, a Research Officer and student in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine (SPH & FM).

Dr Nofemela passed away on Saturday, 16 July 2016 after a brief illness. He is survived by his parents and sister.

The university has been in contact with the family and has offered assistance during this time of bereavement.

Dr Nofemela was well known for his commitment to the Gugulethu community, where he was raised. His research focused on strengthening health and health care, and in particular the community-based antiretroviral services he supported in Gugulethu. He is remembered by those he interacted with in the SPH & FM for his quiet passion, industriousness and commitment, alongside earnestness and a gentle nature.

His funeral will take place at 09:00 on Saturday, 23 July at the Khwezi Community Centre, NY 2, Gugulethu. For those who wish to attend, the family requests graduates and academics to bring along their academic regalia. An academic procession will commence at 08:45 at the Khwezi Community Centre parking lot.

On behalf of the UCT community, I extend heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Dr Nofemela.

UCT will offer counselling support for those affected by these sad news through the Department of Student Affairs and the Human Resources Department for students and staff respectively.

Sincerely

Chris Mitchell
Acting Executive Director
Communication & Marketing Department
