UCT honours memory of economist Jan Graaff

15 January 2015 | Story by Newsroom

The University of Cape Town pays tribute to the late Johannes de Villiers (Jan) Graaff, who died in Cape Town on 7 January 2015.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Max Price says: "UCT conveys condolences to the family of Dr Graaff. We had hoped this week to announce the award of an honorary degree of Doctor of Economic Sciences to him.

"He was one of the most original economists this country has produced, and one of UCT's most distinguished graduates; his Theoretical Welfare Economics, based on his 1950 Cambridge PhD thesis, remains a classic text.

"Dr Graaff had agreed to accept the honorary degree before his death, and we hope that it will be possible for the award to be conferred posthumously later this year."
