An MCom in Economics will be awarded posthumously to Matthew Breier on 13 June.

UCT this week honours Matthew Breier, whose MCom in Economics will be awarded posthumously on 13 June.

He died suddenly from a rare form of leukemia on 8 May 2007, aged 25. His mother, Dr Mignonne Breier, will accept the degree on his behalf, attending with her husband, Dave.

Despite a hearing impairment, Matthew completed his BCom at UCT in 2003, and an honours degree, in economics, with a first-class pass in 2004.

He also won the Economic Society of South Africa's ABSA prize for the best honours essay in economics in South Africa in 2005. "Matthew was considering an academic research career.

He was strongly committed to doing research that would benefit the poor in South Africa," his mother says.
