Selection of new vice-chancellor

01 October 2007

Two weeks ago, Council announced the names of the three shortlisted candidates for the position of Vice-Chancellor. These are Professors Cheryl de la Rey and Martin Hall, both Deputy Vice-Chancellors at UCT, and Dr Max Price, formerly dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand and now an independent consultant. The next step is for the three candidates to meet with representatives of various sectors of the UCT community, including staff and students.

These sectors will be asked to forward comments on the candidates to the Selection Committee. The comments will be taken into consideration during the final stages of the selection process. The Selection Committee will then hold a last set of interviews with the candidates in late September 2007, after which it will determine a final nominee for the position.

The Senate will then be invited to express its support for the candidate as required by the agreed procedure, and the Institutional Forum will be invited to verify that the appropriate process has been properly followed. The nominee will then be presented to the Council for consideration for appointment. It is hoped that the process will be completed in October.
