Executive portfolios and responsibilities

With the arrival of Professor Thandabantu Nhlapo as the fourth deputy vice-chancellor, the executive team is complete. These are the main portfolio responsibilities of the executive, as well as their key reporting relationships and main committee responsibilities.

Vice-chancellor Professor Njabulo Ndebele

Portfolios

The vice-chancellor is accountable for the strategic leadership and management of the university. He has overall accountability for internal and external institutional performance. In addition, he is expected to pay special attention to: relationship-building, both inside and outside the university; to relationships with community and government; and to fundraising.

Reporting relationships

The following report to the vice-chancellor: the DVCs, the registrar, the executive director of human resources, the executive director of finance, the executive director of communication and development.

Main committee responsibilities

The vice-chancellor chairs Senate, the Senate Executive Committee, the University Strategy Committee, the Fellowships Committee, the VC's Management Advisory Group (VCMAG), the University Human Resources Committee, the Fundraising Projects Committee, and the Risk Management Committee.

DVC Professor Martin West

Portfolios

West directly supports the vice-chancellor in managing, directing and co-ordinating the university's academic and administrative systems, and in this role he is the senior DVC. He stands in for the VC in periods of extended absence. He works closely with the VC to give operational effect to his strategic leadership. He also oversees faculty matters and university libraries.

Reporting relationships

The following people report to West: the faculty deans, the director of the Graduate School of Business, the executive director of libraries, the project manager in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, and the director of the Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

Main committee responsibilities

West will chair the Operations Management Advisory Group (OPS MAG), the University Ad Hominem Promotions Committee, and the Nominations Committee. Generally, he will act as deputy chair of those committees chaired by the vice-chancellor.

DVC Professor Cheryl de la Rey

Portfolios

De la Rey's core responsibilities are research and innovation. She will oversee postgraduate student matters, as well as the university's relationship with the health authorities. She will also coordinate the university's transformation initiatives.

Reporting relationships

The following people report to De la Rey: the directors of research and innovation, and the transformation manager.

Main committee responsibilities

De la Rey chairs the University Research Committee, the Doctoral Degrees Board, the Board for Graduate Studies, the Scholarships Committee, the Visiting Scholars' Fund, the Postgraduate Student Funding Committee, and the Transformation Management Advisory Group. She represents the executive on the Institutional Forum.

DVC Professor Martin Hall

Portfolios

Hall's central responsibilities lie in planning and budgeting. He has executive responsibility for academic planning, including curriculum and examination matters. He oversees quality assurance, monitors developments in higher education policy, and acts as the university's trustee on the Cape Higher Education Consortium. He assists the VC and has executive responsibility for development and fundraising. Hall also oversees information and communication technology.

Reporting relationships

The following report to Hall: the executive director of communication and development, the executive director of information and communication technology, and the director of planning.

Main committee responsibilities

Hall chairs the Planning and Budgeting Working Group, the Distinguished Teachers Award Committee, the Quality Assurance Working Group, the Senate Academic Planning Committee, the Examination and Assessment Committee, and the University ICT Committee.

DVC Professor Thandabantu Nhlapo

Portfolios

Nhlapo is responsible for the student area, including matters of student development and transformation. He is responsible for external relations and oversees the International Academic Programmes Office and the university's HIV/AIDS initiatives. He also represents the executive on the Institutional Forum.

Reporting relationships

The following report to Nhlapo: the executive director for Student Development and Services Department, the head of the International Academic Programmes Office.

Main committee responsibilities

Nhlapo chairs the University Student Development and Services Committee, the Financial Aid Committee, the Admissions Committee, the HIV/AIDS Working Group, and is a member of the SHAWCO board.
