UCT women square up to UK visitors

19 July 2004

At a stretch: Hilda-Mart du Toit (GS) nets another one for UCT, while teammate Bianca Luyt (back) and University of Nottingham's Clare Denham (GD) and Gemma Wright (GK) look on.

The UCT and Cape Tech netball first teams played host last week to two teams from the University of Nottingham, currently on a jaunt through South Africa.

The Cape Town sides played their UK counterparts on neighbouring courts at Cape Tech, with UCT taking on the Nottingham second team. The UCT women, fresh off a successful SASSU games, breezed to a 36-19 win.

But the English players could be excused for their lacklustre form. They'd hardly slept on the flight over from the UK, landed in Cape Town but two days earlier, and had been painting the town red the night before the game.

Poor netball results aside, the visitors were making the most of their visit to South Africa. And why not? They'd just had two weeks of summer rain back home, and the mid-afternoon sun was baking in mid-winter Cape Town.
