Womens Day

11 August 2003
In celebration of National Woman's Day this past Saturday, the UCT community was invited to help in bake and sell gingerbread biscuits, all in aid of the Trauma Unit and Rape Crisis Centre.

The bake-off, which took place on Tuesday, August 5, in the Smuts Hall kitchen, attracted about 60 eager bakers who worked from 20h00 until 02h30 the next morning. Staff and students alike were able to sign up for hour-long shifts in this fundraising and public awareness event, organised by the UCT Gender Forum. Both men and women volunteered their services, and it was a great success, according to the Gender Forum's Bee Wijsenbeek.

"We don't know exactly how many gingerbread women were baked, we lost count," she said.

These fresh treats sold fast around campus and more gingerbread delights were baked on Thursday evening.
