UCT debate team in car accident

11 August 2003
Eight members of UCT's Debating Union were involved in a car accident near Calvinia on August 31.

As part of the loveLife Games programme, the group was travelling in a hired combi to adjudicate a provincial schools debating competition in Uppington over that weekend.

Bulelani Futshane, Luzuko Hina, Theo Mokgatle and Dean Peters were treated and discharged from hospital on the day of the accident.

David Xu and Peter-Paul Mbele were treated and have recently been discharged from hospital.

Abigail Molotchwa and Sithembile Mbete are still in the Durbanville Medi-Clinic.

Molotchwa is in the intensive care unit. Hospital sources say she is in a stable condition and waiting to be transferred to either Tygerberg or Groote Schuur once a bed becomes available.

Mbete is also in a stable condition in the hospital's surgery ward and is expected to be released within the next two weeks.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
