UCT musicians for festival

21 July 2003
Flautist Alex Pedro, a second-year student at UCT's South African College of Music (SACM), will feature among the cream of the province's young classical and jazz musicians who will be showcased at the annual Artscape/Cape Philharmonic Orchestra Youth Music Festival.

The festival will be held at the Artscape Opera House on July 26 and 27. The SACM's Associate Professor Michael Rossi will conduct the Youth Jazz Big Band on Sunday, July 27, at 15h00. Pedro will play on July 26, at 20h00 when he will give a solo performance with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by David Tidboald.

The Youth Music Festival is the 32nd of its kind and has become an important launch pad for the professional careers of South African classical musicians such as Gerard Korsten and Nina Schumann. It has grown to provide talented young musicians in the local jazz arena with the same opportunity.

Booking can be made at Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-Seat, 421-7695. Student and pensioner concessions are available.
