SA Rhodes Scholars celebrate

24 February 2003

The Rhodes Trust, which co-ordinates the Rhodes Scholarships worldwide, commemorated the centenary of the Rhodes Scholarships worldwide this year (see also Shawco welcomes Rhodes scholars), and held a week-long series of celebrations in Cape Town. The festivities were concluded at a banquet at Vergelegen, where former president Nelson Mandela was the guest of honour. Photographed at the function were newly elected South African Rhodes Scholars from UCT: (from left) Jan van Zyl Smit, BA (Hons) in Mathematics and Classics and LLB, now working as a researcher at the Constitutional Court; Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Martin West; Joanne Stevens, sixth year MBChB, Mark Abrahamson, BBusSc (actuarial science), now doing MBusSc (finance); and Mohammed Ali, sixth year MBChB.
