Taking on the big issue

14 October 2002
VINCE van der Byl, former Natal cricket hero, is calling on members of the UCT community to get involved with the Big Issue magazine.

Van der Byl is an ardent supporter of the publication, especially its social programme, the "Big Step", which endeavours to develop or enhance vendors' skills for economic and social growth.

“I have been involved with the Big Issue for over a year and the work they're doing is the most amazing thing. Everyone is looking for a charity to support and I think that Big Issue is a good cause,” he explains enthusiastically.

According to the Big Issue's editor, Shane Halpin, Van der Byl's contribution to the magazine has been significant as he not only has the magazine cover printed free every month, but he regularly organises advertisers and contributors for the publication. Halpin is quick to add, though, that any support from interested parties is welcome.

Since its inception in South Africa in1997, Big Issue magazine has created 7 000 jobs, raised close to R4-million for its vendors, and in the process set up various social empowerment programmes for its vendors.
