The third issue of the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) research magazine Umthombo highlights both the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance and the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA), of which UCT is a member.

Several articles turn the spotlight on how the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance honours the legacy of its namesake by providing strategic leadership skills for people who want to make a difference in the world.

The ARUA feature examines the network’s response to the continent’s need for capable and engaged research universities working to solve the region’s development challenges.

Umthombo showcases the wide range of research being undertaken at the university. While the publication is written with an international audience in mind, there is much to interest local readers.

Issue three explores the question of whether killer whales are eating sharks in Cape Town’s waters and looks at the role of international relations in South Africa’s transition to democracy. Other features include one on a new species of dinosaur in Mongolia and another on strategies to care for South African children living below the poverty line.
