FHS graduate’s research focuses on combating breast cancer in African women

Meet Maryam Karaan, a driven Health Sciences graduate who is on a mission to help combat cancer through her research. After the loss of many of her family members to cancer, Karaan was inspired to contribute ground breaking research within the field.

Her ambitions did not just stop in the research lab, Karaan is also a successful business owner and leveraged her scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit to create a skincare line with two of her friends.

This multifaceted University of Cape Town graduate received a MSc Medicine in Chemical Biology degree during the Faculty of Health Sciences graduation ceremony on 14 December 2023.
