In remembrance: Nkosinathi Nkomo

Dear students and colleagues

It is with a profound sense of grief that I inform you of the death of Mr Nkosinathi Nkomo (25). He passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, 3 December 2017.

The details surrounding Mr Nkomo’s death are still unclear. At present, it seems as if he fell to his death from a building in the city of Cape Town, but the circumstances are not yet clear. The South African Police Service is investigating the details.

In 2016 Mr Nkomo was a third-year civil engineering student at UCT. Even though he was not registered this year, his studies for 2018 were secured as he had been awarded a scholarship by a UCT professor who did not wish to be named.

In October Mr Nkomo made media headlines for his innovative idea to help address Cape Town’s water crisis. He created an affordable grey-water system that collects water from bathroom plumbing and stores it for use in irrigation and toilet flushing.

He has been described as having a smile that lights up a room and being an incredibly humble and tenacious young man.

His funeral service will be held on Sunday, 10 December, at the Orlando East Seventh-day Adventist Church in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Our heartfelt thoughts are with Mr Nkomo’s family and friends, and we convey our deepest condolences to them and everyone who knew him.

Cape Town water crisis



At UCT our researchers have been analysing the causes of the current drought, monitoring water usage on campus and in the city, and looking for ways to save water while there is still time. As part of UCT’s water-saving campaign, all members of the campus community are encouraged to reduce their water use by half, which will help Cape Town to meet its water-use goals and ensure a water-sustainable university in the future.
