UCT to play key role to boost TB research and accelerate capacity development at Univen
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Holistic Drug Discovery and Development Unit (H3D) has announced a new partnership in which the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC), through its Strategic Health Innovation Partnerships (SHIP) programme, will award a grant to the University of Venda (UNIVEN) chemistry department to boost local tuberculosis (TB) research. This will also accelerate capacity development at the university.

Public transport info gaps in Cape Town limit users’ ability to plan and arrive on time and safely
While it's fairly easy for a car owner to hop into their vehicle, turn on their navigation system and head off to a new place, it's a lot more difficult to do that as a public transport user in Cape Town. Information gaps of public transport can severely constrain a person's ability to reach various opportunities in the city, whether that be getting to a job interview in time, meeting with friends on the weekend, or exploring new places.

Study finds obesity in pregnant women could increase risk of poor health for mother and baby
Maternal obesity changes the structure of the placenta (a vital organ that nourishes the baby during pregnancy) more than gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a form of diabetes first occurring in pregnancy. The new insight, published in The Journal of Physiology , adds to the understanding about the mechanisms underlying poor pregnancy outcomes and the subsequent greater risk of poor neonatal and offspring health.

A comparative study between two diagnostic interventions uncovers an improved active case finding strategy for TB
A study funded by the US National Institutes of Health and the South African Medical Research Council has found that a low-cost scalable (easy to replicate and start-up) mobile mini-clinic, operated by two health care workers, and containing newer portable battery-operated DNA-based diagnostics (Gene Xpert Edge), was feasible and effective for community-based active case finding of tuberculosis in a resource-poor TB endemic setting.
