Allow all professional nurses and midwives to prescribe PrEP, say experts
In an editorial published in the South African Medical Journal , the University of Cape Town (UCT) HIV experts have urged the National Department of Health, the South African Pharmacy Council, nurse training institutions and authorities to allow all professional nurses and midwives to prescribe pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to enable simplified and de-medicalised PrEP with an urgent focus on expanding the PrEP service delivery workforce.

South Africa's population aged 55 and above is redefining aging and reshaping consumer behaviour. The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Liberty Institute of Strategic Marketing's 'Forerunners Report (Over 55s),' published on Thursday, 19 October 2023, found that middle-class South Africans are staying economically active for longer . Despite limited research on this demographic, it is gaining significance and evolving, which is especially valuable in the context of a struggling economy.

Disability benefits may help protect people with schizophrenia against the economic costs of the disorder
People living with schizophrenia are at risk of suffering from extreme economic hardships. However, recent research found that disability benefits may protect against some of the economic costs associated with the disorder. The findings are published in the Journal of Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology .

UCT working to address student wellness needs
In recent years, mental health conditions across the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) student population have increased markedly, resulting in more students needing assistance for longer periods of time. In an effort to raise more funds to address student wellness needs, the university will host the inaugural UCT Day on Friday, 6 October.
