UCT’s A-rated researchers tally the highest in SA
The University of Cape Town (UCT) shone at this year’s National Research Foundation (NRF) awards, with 31 researchers awarded A-ratings in 2022 in what is the highest of any university in South Africa, while six UCT researchers won awards in three categories.

The Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development goes national
Following 17 years of successfully providing innovative entrepreneurial training to post-matric learners in Cape Town, the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development (RAA) – a partnership between the Raymond Ackerman Foundation and the University of Cape Town Graduate School of Business (UCT GSB) – is going national. The programme will now be extended to entrepreneurs nationwide as it reshapes the format to reach a wider audience.

Street-based female sex workers of all ages in SA at sustained high risk of acquiring HIV
Street-based female sex workers in South Africa have extraordinarily high HIV incidence, emphasising the need to sustain and strengthen efforts to mitigate risk and provide adequate care. This is according to a paper published today in the Lancet HIV journal.

HIV a culprit in more than one million TB deaths in South Africa, study finds
HIV has dramatically increased tuberculosis (TB) incidence and mortality in South Africa, according to the first study to assess the impact of HIV and multiple TB interventions on the country's TB burden at a national level.

UCT researcher awarded grant for scientific excellence
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Dr Bessie Malila, a junior research fellow in the Division of Biomedical Engineering, was recently awarded the African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence-Pilot Project (ARISE-PP) research grant, an African Academy of Sciences initiative. Her proposal, geared towards the implementation of a digital health testbed for evaluating and validating telemedicine and mobile health (mHealth) applications, is the only award from South Africa for this scheme.

University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng has been named the winner of the inaugural Africa Education Medal , launched this year by T4 Education and HP in collaboration with Intel and Microsoft.

It’s too costly to do nothing about perinatal mental health problems in South Africa
In South Africa, between 16% and 50% of women during pregnancy and the year after birth will experience symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. Considering the lifetime impacts of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD) and suicide on mothers and children, the estimated costs of perinatal mental health problems is R49.3 billion (US$2.9 billion).

Falls and burns significantly contribute to the burden of infant injuries in Cape Town, according to a new study published in the South African Journal of Child Health .
