UCT’s 100UP programme embarks on massive fundraising drive to help disadvantaged pupils
The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) 100UP programme has embarked on a massive fundraising drive to garner much-needed support. Despite still receiving good financial support, many corporate funders have been left out of pocket and have had to withdraw from the programme as a result of financial difficulties brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Two additions to UCT’s growing A-rated cohort of outstanding researchers
The University of Cape Town (UCT) recently welcomed two additions to its growing list of National Research Foundation (NRF) A-rated researchers, bringing the total number of A-rated researchers for the period in review to seven. The newly-rated researchers are Professor Michael Claeys, Department of Chemical Engineering and Professor Giona Tuccini, Department of Italian Studies.

Research shows that antiretroviral treatment reduces the risk of developing active TB
Research findings recently published in the Frontiers in Immunology journal show that antiretroviral treatment (ART) reduces the risk of developing active tuberculosis (TB) in HIV co-infected people by reducing the activation of the body's immune response.

UCT student lauded for world-class research in cervical cancer-causing virus, HPV
Melissa Marx, an MSc student in the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), is conducting ground-breaking research in the field of cervical human papillomavirus (HPV). She hopes that her findings will set a strong foundation as scientists work towards discovering therapeutics to decrease the high burden of HPV infection in the country, on the continent and around globe.

UCT scientists fine-tuning TB technology to understand transmission
As Tuberculosis (TB) awareness month kicks off, it’s appropriate to remember that it is ranked as one of the deadliest infectious diseases globally. According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Tuberculosis Report , which was released in October 2020, Africa hosts 25% of the world’s TB burden, and 3.6% of these global cases are attributed to South Africa – with an estimated 360 000 people in the country having contracted TB in 2019.
