From 11 to 19 August 2022, the University of Cape Town (UCT) Marikana Support Forum held a series of events – titled “After Marikana: Ongoing struggles and the crises of everyday life” – to mark a decade since the Marikana massacre on 16 August 2012.
The aim of the series of events was to highlight the impact of capitalism and the broader socio-economic crises workers contend with daily. While the focus was on Marikana, the events tried to highlight the similarities between the struggles of workers and the community in Marikana, and those of others across the country. The main aim, however, was to show that exploitation did not end in 2012 nor in Marikana – but that it still continues today.
