The University of Cape Town’s (UCT) Residence Academic Development Committee (RADC) has stepped up its webinar series, which was launched to support first-year students living in residences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With students back in residences and on campus, these webinars are now being offered more regularly and to a broader student audience.

Of the four webinars planned for August, two remain: “Personal Leadership and Organisation” and “Developing Social and Professional Relationships”.

Deputy Vice-chancellor for Transformation, Student Affairs and Social Responsiveness Professor Elelwani Ramugondo will speak at the “Personal Leadership and Organisation” session on 29 August, from 18:15 to 19:15. On 31 August Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng will speak on “Developing Social and Professional Relationships” from 12:45 to 13:45.

The webinar series was introduced in 2020 by the RADC’s sub-committee on funding. The aim was to offer academic and psychosocial support to residence students during the COVID-19 lockdown, no matter where they were located.

The webinars have now created a community of shared learning experiences where students and staff engage on topics that are helpful and enabling for students. In 2021 the webinar series ran for the full academic year with growing numbers of students registering for these virtual sessions.

Topics presented include transitioning to university life, academic success, exam preparation, stress management, and mental health.

Sign up for the remaining August webinars as well as those planned for the rest of 2022.
