Performance Management, Reward and Recognition System Review Project: Phase 1

27 October 2021 | VC Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng

Dear colleagues

Our vision as an institution is to be an inclusive, engaged and research-intensive African university. This includes inspiring creativity through outstanding achievements in discovery and innovation; celebrating the quality of learning and contribution to citizenship; enhancing the lives of students and staff; advancing a more equitable and sustainable social order; and aspiring to be a leader in the global higher education landscape.

The university has brokered the services of PricewaterhouseCoopers to conduct an independent, consolidated review of performance management and reward systems, processes and policies across UCT, aimed at all staff members at all levels and categories of UCT employment to ensure that we are adhering to our commitments as an institution to our staff.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown, the initiation of this survey was delayed until such time that all members of staff could participate equitably.

The purpose of the review is to assess:

  • what is working in the performance management and reward systems and processes
  • what is not working in the current systems and processes
  • what are the gaps and where to improve performance outcomes
  • what is obsolete that can be taken out of the system and process.

The review and assessment will require consultation with a wide stakeholder group at all levels and across all functions of the university. Engagement will take the form of a survey, followed by smaller focus group discussions with representatives across each category of staff and function within the university.

Participation in this review will provide an opportunity for you to share your insights on the current system and processes, as well as contribute to the recommendations for an improved performance management and reward and recognition solution going forward.

Today you will receive a link to the survey by email. The communication will include detailed instructions on how to complete the survey. Should you have any questions or queries before then, you may contact Performance Review Survey or the Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) in your area.

You are encouraged to complete the survey as this will assist the team to explore the possibilities for improved performance management, reward and recognition systems and processes.

#HaveYourSay to unleash our tomorrow!

Sincerely

Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng
Vice-Chancellor
