Dear students and colleagues

This campus announcement aims to inform members of the University of Cape Town community about:

1. The Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture presented by Professor Vivek Chibber

Professor of Sociology at New York University, Vivek Chibber, will present the 2017 Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture, which is titled “Eurocentrism, the academy and social emancipation”. The lecture will take place on Monday, 14 August 2017, at 18:00 in the New Lecture Theatre on upper campus.


2. Time still available to apply for the UCT Teaching Grant

Individual academics, teams and departments are invited to apply for the UCT Teaching Grant to fund new initiatives aimed at making teaching at the university more effective. The grant is available to support individuals or teams who are engaged in developing departmental-, programme- or faculty-level innovations to curricula or courses aimed at improving student learning, including through the use of educational technology. Grants of up to R25 000 are available. Applications must be made by using the TGA2 form.

Please email Cindy Gilbert with your intention to submit by 21 August 2017. The closing date for applications is 8 September 2017. A briefing session will be held on 31 August 2017.

3. Residence Academic Development Committee’s call for proposals

The university’s Residence Academic Development Committee (RADC) is calling for new proposals for Living and Learning programmes 2017. The purpose of the Living and Learning programmes is to establish a bridging gap between faculties and residences and to foster student success.


4. Upper campus traffic update for 12 August

On Saturday, 12 August, the UCT Cycling Club will be hosting Stellenbosch University for the annual intervarsity competition. As a result, there will be road closures in place on upper campus between 07:00 and 10:00.
