Students on cloud UCT

myUCTGoing live: Undergraduate and honours students were the first to savour myUCT.ac.za.

Call it email on steroids.

On 17 August, Information & Communication Technology Services (ICTS) launched the first instalment of myUCT.ac.za, a new cloud-based - ie internet-based - email service. Undergraduate and honours students were the first to have mailboxes created for them on the system, which will co-exist with their GroupWise service until the end of 2011.

Using Microsoft's Outlook Live service, myUCT.ac.za comes with a host of services and facilities. These include 10GB of mailbox space (so good for a while), 25GB of online storage, instant messaging, free use of Office Web Apps and an email address for life. (Plus the promise of spam-free email.)

Master's, doctoral and postdoctoral students will be moved as part of the staff migration in 2012.
