All three UCT graduates nominated for the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship last year won the award to continue their studies.
Zerene Haddad finished her BA, majoring in English literature, Spanish and history, and will be continuing her studies with honors in history. Christopher Holdridge will begin his history master's, writing his dissertation on the role of humour in colonial society.
Thembi Luckett, a researcher at the Centre for Early Childhood Development, will continue her studies at UCT with a master's in social justice. Luckett is also an activist involved in several organisations, including the Social Justice Coalition.
Further scholarship recipients from other institutions also intend continuing their studies at UCT this year. These include Khanyisa Mtombeni of the Tertiary School in Business Administration, Musa Nzimande of Mangosuthu University of Technology, Hapiloe Maranyane of the University of Johannesburg, and Elias Phaahla of the University of the Witwatersrand.
The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, which includes full tuition fees and living expenses for postgraduate study, is awarded to students who excel academically and show leadership skills.
