Marquard laurels DVC with fellowship

24 October 2005

Leo Marquard residence has added two new fellows to its fold. DVC Professor Martin Hall and handyman Graham Rothquell were accepted as the two newest Marquard Fellows at a recent dinner at the men's residence, Hall for his continued contribution to university and student life, Rothquell for his willingness to go the extra mile for students, says 2004/2005 head student Peter-Paul ka Mbele.

Other residence stalwarts were also honoured at the dinner, an annual end-of-year event where the "spirit of Marquard" and its residents, both past and present, is commemorated. Fikile Songxaba was named as the winner of the Old Marquardian Association award, made to a senior student for outstanding contributions to the residence. Simbarashe Bassoppo-Moyo and Christopher Jones won Etienne Swart Awards for bringing vitality to life at Marquard. And in addition to awards for sports performance and the like, certificates of service were also presented to a number of students.

"As a residence, we need to play an influential role in the issues involving students campus wide," said Ka Mbele in a spirited speech, his last as head student.

"I do not need to emphasise the importance of student involvement in issues affecting them. I would then encourage all Marquardians, to join the student leaders in fighting the struggle that we still face on this campus."
