The Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome is now offering tours of the universe.

The revamped Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome opened its doors earlier this year. The facility provides not only traditional shows of the night sky, but also offers researchers a tool with which to visualise and analyse their data. And it allows them to present that data directly to the public in an immersive and visual form.

The Data to Dome public viewings are the first of these science engagement initiatives. Members of the public are invited to, for the first time, see astronomy data visualised on the planetarium’s digital dome and hear about research that is being done by astronomers in Cape Town.

Professor Tom Jarrett, holder of the South Africa Research Chair in Astrophysics and Space Science at the University of Cape Town, and Associate Professor Michelle Cluver, associate director of the Inter-University Institute for Data Intensive Astronomy (IDIA) and Iziko Planetarium astronomer, will serve as the tour guides of the planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies.

The Data to Dome shows will be held at the Iziko Planetarium and Digital Dome, 25 Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town, on 18 December at 15:00 and on 8 and 15 January at 14:00.

Please contact Kim Lindeboom (021 481 3874) for reservations and enquiries.
