On Tuesday, 20 August 2024, the University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted the first Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture of the year, featuring Nobel Laureate Professor Joachim Frank. Renowned for his groundbreaking work in cryo-electron microscopy, Prof Frank presented a lecture titled “Cryo-electron microscopy, a new foundation for molecular medicine and drug design”.
Hosted by UCT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mosa Moshabela, the lecture explored the transformative impact of cryo-EM on the study of biological molecules, highlighting its role in drug design and the development of vaccines, including those for COVID-19. This event is part of UCT’s commitment to sharing knowledge from leading academics and innovators with the broader community.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Open Lecture series was established to enable anyone in the community, whether they are connected to the university or not, to have the benefit of hearing first-hand from academics, researchers and innovators from South Africa, but particularly from those around the world, who have distinguished themselves in their areas of expertise.
Attendance to the lectures is free of charge as the series is one of the ways that UCT seeks to give back to the Cape Town community.
There was no lecture in 2015.
