UCT’s best creatives are set to shine at the 53rd annual Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards, with 33 of the nominations for 2017 going to UCT students and alumni.

The annual awards are among the most prestigious in the South African performing arts industry.

What Remains, written by UCT alumnus Nadia Davis, scooped six nominations, including best director (for UCT Associate Professor Jay Pather), best new South African script and best production (for Davis), as well as best performance by an actress in a play (for alumnus Faniswa Yisa).

Nominated for best performance by a lead actor in a play are alumni Ephraim Gordon (Die Dans van die Watermeid) and Marty Kintu (Topdog/Underdog).

UCT students Matthew Stuurman and Tristan de Beer have both been nominated for most promising student, while the recently graduated Dara Beth, Nwabisa Plaatjie and Thando Mangcu will vie for best new director.

The winners will be announced on 18 March at the Baxter Theatre Centre.

At UCT our researchers have been analysing the causes of the current drought, monitoring water usage on campus and in the city, and looking for ways to save water while there is still time. As part of UCT’s water-saving campaign, all members of the campus community are encouraged to reduce their water use by half, which will help Cape Town to meet its water-use goals and ensure a water-sustainable university in the future.
