As we reflect on 2024, I am struck by the resilience, determination and unity that have shaped this chapter in the University of Cape Town’s (UCT) ongoing journey. This year marked my fifth as chancellor of this great institution – a role that has granted me a front-row seat to a remarkable process of renewal and growth.

When I began my tenure in 2020, UCT was navigating a period of uncertainty, grappling with difficult transitions and a global pandemic that tested the strength of every institution. Over the past five years, we have seen the university not only recover but begin to reimagine itself with renewed clarity of vision and boldness of purpose.

The year under review has been especially significant. A newly constituted university Council took office in 2024, signalling a fresh era of governance, leadership, and accountability. This new Council, diverse and deeply committed to UCT’s public mission, has brought with it renewed confidence and a sense of stability.

This was also the year when the university completed several key leadership appointments, most notably the appointment of Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Mosa Moshabela. His appointment, along with other senior appointments, marks a decisive step forward in solidifying the university’s executive leadership and its capacity to navigate the complex landscape of higher education in South Africa and beyond.

These accomplishments speak not only to the visible progress made but also to the strength of UCT’s values-driven approach: putting people first, upholding excellence, and remaining grounded in its commitment to transformation, inclusion, and global relevance.

What we are witnessing is a university that has faced its challenges with courage and is now emerging with greater clarity and resolve. The collective effort of staff, students, leadership, and our broader community has laid a solid foundation for a future that is not only more stable, but more just, creative and responsive to society’s evolving needs.

It continues to be an honour to serve as chancellor during this pivotal period. I look forward to walking alongside UCT as it continues to rise, lead, and inspire.

Sincerely

Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe
Chancellor
