Most of the 2020 academic year was spent in lockdown after COVID-19 became a clear and present danger globally. Visual images of the university at work and play are precious reminders of how the UCT community is made up of is far more than its ‘in situ’ presence of buildings and campuses. These images reflect this community in a year of virtual interaction – the academics, researchers, PASS staff, students, alumni, local community members and other stakeholders. Many of the traditional and annual activities and events had to be reimagined. But the university’s life continued in new formats and through virtual activities, as UCT grappled with a new way of being – on campus, at home and in the community.

Year in Review 2020

This was the year COVID-19 stretched us, thrust us into the unknown and challenged us to think of new ways of doing and being. It was a year we moved to remote teaching and learning, with many of our colleagues working remotely. This edition is dedicated to the men and women who worked hard to ensure that the education programme continues, and students who worked equally hard under unusual circumstances.
