On 10 July 2025, the University of Cape Town (UCT) hosted the second instalment of the Collective Conversations series, a four-part dialogue platform uniting academia, government and civil society to address urgent societal priorities. This discussion focused on charting solutions to strengthen health-care systems that move beyond disease treatment, placing the needs of patients and communities at the centre, while addressing the dual challenge of rising communicable and non-communicable diseases in South Africa.

The discussion brought together UCT head of Health Policy and Systems Division in the School of Public Health, Professor Lucy Gilson, Dr Keith Cloete, Head of the Western Cape Department of Health & Wellness, and Amelia Mfiki, a community health advocate with the Provincial Council on AIDS & TB. Together, they explored the power of co-creation, equitable service delivery and the urgent need to shift from a purely biomedical lens to psychosocial and systems-based models of care. The dialogue underscores UCT’s role as both a thought leader and collaborative partner in shaping innovative, people-centred health systems designed to advance collective wellbeing over the next decade.
