VC Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng urges students to make good choices as they reach this milestone in their lives and consider their futures.

University of Cape Town (UCT) Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng wished learners well for the 2018 matric exams, urging them choose UCT for their post-school studies and promising them that funding options were available to make this possible.

“Funding your studies should be the least of your worries if you are coming to study at UCT,” Phakeng told them, pointing to the wide range of available bursaries, scholarships and financial aid packages.

The VC also revealed that she started school in a classroom under a tree, and that her family moved around a lot when she was a child which forced her to constantly have to make new friends. But challenges like these shouldn’t deter learners from pursuing their dreams.

“Hard work can open many doors for you,” Phakeng said, joking that while “UCT is the best”, she wouldn’t “take it too personally” if learners apply to other institutions.
